JBL Endurance Jump Bluetooth In-Ear Headphone

Available in black, blue, light blue, green, or red, the neckband-style Endurance Jump earphones can appear slightly chunky at first—the earpieces are huge compared with a standard in-ear pair. But this design aids in stability and fit security. The earpieces utilize JBL's TwistLock system—turning them once inside the ear provides exceptional stability. When properly in place, these earphones are not coming out, making them ideal for gym use.

A Power Hook, as JBL calls it, loops up over the ear for added stability and automatically turns the earphones on or off when they are being put on or taken off. This can be annoying if you want to pair them before wearing them—it's possible, but you need to hold the earphones in a certain way to keep them powered up.

Tapping the outer panel of the right ear, which has a touch-sensitive control panel, plays or pauses music, and also handles incoming calls. Two taps skips a track forward, three taps skips to the previous track. Volume is controlled with finger swipes on this same panel—it works, but you can sometimes accidentally pause or play music when adjusting volume because all of these taps and swipes use the same real estate. Once you develop a technique, it's easy to avoid misfires.

JBL Endurance JumpThe earphones ship with three clear pairs of silicone eartips, a micro USB charging cable, and a rubber carrying pouch.

The mic offers average intelligibility. Using the Voice Memos app on an iPhone 8, we could understand every word we recorded, but the audio was fuzzy and distant, as is typical of built-in mics on affordable Bluetooth in-ears.

JBL estimates battery life to be eight hours or so, with 10 minutes of charging buying you about an hour of playback. Your results will vary with your volume levels.

Internally, 10mm drivers deliver 20Hz-20kHz of frequency range. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," you get very powerful bass depth. At top, unwise listening levels, the bass on this track doesn't distort, and at more reasonable levels, the lows still sound powerful, like there's a built-in subwoofer. Thankfully, the bass onslaught is balanced out by sculpted highs.

Bill Callahan's "Drover," a track with far less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Endurance Jump's general sound signature. The drums here sound thunderous—not terribly natural, but powerful, that's for sure. And JBL knows how to match the thunder with crisp definition in the high-mids and highs, so that Callahan's baritone vocals get as much crisp treble edge as they do added richness in the low-mids. The acoustic guitar strums and higher register percussive hits have a brightness to them, as well. The boosting and sculpting isn't subtle, but it ends up being balanced enough so that clarity isn't an issue.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," the kick drum loop receives plenty of high-mid presence, allowing its attack to retain its punchiness, while the vinyl crackle and hiss, usually relegated to background status, is pushed notably forward in the mix. The sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat are delivered with serious power, and the drum loop itself gets added bass thump. The vocal performances on this track have a strong high-mids presence that aids in clarity but also adds a bit of sibilance.

Orchestral tracks, like the opening scene from John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary, get some obvious boosting in the lows and low-mids that pushes the lower register instrumentation forward in the mix, while the higher register brass, strings, and vocals retain a bright presence. This is nowhere near a flat response, natural sound, but if boosted lows motivate your workouts, you've come to the right place.

Bluetooth wireless allows you to stream high quality music through a full 8 hours without the worry of messy wires interfering with your workout. In just 10 minutes, you can power your headphones for an hour of use.
